The Ram half-ton truck lineup is changing with the addition of the new Ramcharger and a new line of engines powering these pickup trucks.
The last time the Ram 1500 entered a new generation, it was the newest truck with the most advanced systems in the market. After only a few years, this truck has fallen behind some of the others, but that’s about to change. The 2025 Ram pickup truck lineup brings some serious changes, making it easy to find excellent power, an electric truck, or a pickup with an unlimited driving range. Let’s take a look.
The new Ramcharger could be the Ram 1500 for you
Electric vehicles are limited by their driving range, but Ram found a unique way to create a battery-powered truck that continuously adds driving range to the electric motors. The new Ramcharger has an onboard power generator, which is simply a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine, sending power to the batteries during your drive. The only way to run out of driving range is to run out of gasoline for this power generator.
Theoretically, the new Ramcharger can drive for 690 miles when the batteries are full, and the gas tank is also full. This new electric pickup produces 663 horsepower and 615 lb-ft of torque, and it is a real EV. This is not a hybrid truck because the gasoline engine does not drive the axles, ever. The only purpose of the V6 engine is to send power to the batteries operating the electric motors. The Pentastar V6 is rated at 130 kW, sending ample power to the 92-kWh battery pack.
Although this setup might sound a bit like cheating, it allows this new Ram truck to meet the compliance and government mandates that make it a true battery-powered truck, which makes it eligible for the EV tax credits.
Ram ditches all V8 engines
The writing has been on the proverbial wall for Ram to move away from its V8-engine-heavy lineup. The current Ram 1500 offerings feature three Hemi V8 engines, but the new lineup won’t have any V8s in the mix. Instead, the new Ram 1500 will make use of the Hurricane 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine. The only other engine we’ll see in the future Ram truck lineup is a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine. Gone are the days of the diesel and V8 engines for this truck lineup.
The new 3.0-liter Hurricane engine makes 420 horsepower and 469 lb-ft of torque. This is more than enough power to make you forget about the V8 engines that used to be under the hood. There’s also a High Output engine that delivers 540 horsepower and 521 lb-ft of torque. The Pentastar engine should continue to deliver 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque, which it’s been rated at for a few years.
How much will these Ram trucks tow and carry?
The new Ramcharger should be the most capable of the new Ram 1500 pickup truck lineup. This truck is expected to tow up to 14,000 pounds and carry as much as 2,625 pounds of payload in the bed. That’s an impressive figure and better than most electric trucks.
The new Hurricane-powered ram trucks can reach 11,580 pounds of towing and offer payload figures of 2,300 pounds. These figures are less than what we find in the Ramcharger, but still respectable and useful.
Ram adopts impressive interior upgrades
The new Ram trucks will include larger screens, making it easier to have the desired information while driving. The standard infotainment screen will now be the 12-inch model that was all the rage when it first appeared. The upgrade from this screen will be a 14.5-inch version, giving a larger display to those reaching for higher trims. Somewhere in the Ram 1500 range, a configurable 10.25-inch screen will be offered for passengers, making it easy for everyone to have the screen they want during the ride.
The new Ram lineup also features a new fully integrated color HUD that can display turn-by-turn navigation, current speed, current gear, and speed limit. The safety package provides Level 2 and Level 2 plus semi-autonomous driving on mapped roads.
Finally, this new line of Ram 1500 pickup trucks comes with a 1.8-kW onboard inverter to power accessories in the cabin and in the bed. There’s also a digital review mirror that provides more functionality with the tow/haul modes.
Will the new 2025 Ram 1500 lineup bring you the truck you want to drive? Will it be the new Ramcharger or one of the Hurricane-powered models?
