Mazda CX-70: Filling the Two-Row Midsize SUV Gap

The midsize SUV market is changing, and the new 2025 Mazda CX-70 is ready to fill the gap left behind by other automakers. Who will drive this new Mazda SUV?

Larger, more volume-oriented automakers might not be able to support a midsize two-row SUV in a world filled with new three-row models, but Mazda could. In fact, Mazda improved its SUV lineup, first with the new CX-90, which replaced the CX-9, and now with the CX-70. Instead of putting this new Mazda SUV in the middle of the CX-60 and CX-90 in terms of size, it’s exactly the same size as one of these SUVs.

Two instead of three

The new CX-70 is the same size as the CX-90, but it has two rows of seats instead of three. This means seating for five instead of seven passengers and lots of room for cargo in the rear. When you want to carry the gear for everyone without folding any seats down, this new Mazda SUV could be the ideal option to make it easier to enjoy some adventures together wherever you want to go. This two-row midsize SUV configuration isn’t as popular as most configurations offered today, but that could make it a good option.

The SUV transition

Many automakers focus their midsize SUV efforts on three-row or electric SUVs and have begun to move away from the two-row SUV build. This means a gap is forming in the market, which could be the perfect place for the Mazda CX-70 to fill in and become a popular choice for many drivers. This new SUV appeals to a specific segment of the market, which might not make it a huge success, but it adds another vehicle to the small Mazda lineup. This means the CX-70 might be perfectly timed for the current market.

Power matches the sibling

The new CX-70 brings the same powertrains as its CX-90 sibling. This means three power options and two powertrains to choose from. The standard powertrain gives you a 3.3-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder engine that sends 280 horsepower and 332 lb-t of torque to the wheels. The higher performance version of this powertrain gives you 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.

There’s also a hybrid powertrain which is a PHEV version with an electric motor and 14.8-kWh battery pack. This electric system mates with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine to send 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque to the wheels.
Both powertrains utilize an 8-speed automatic transmission, and all versions of the Mazda CX-70 employ full-time AWD.

Mazda vehicles are supposed to be fun to drive, and the CX-70 isn’t an exception to this. Every version has a sporty suspension, tires, and braking to give this SUV plenty of control and performance on any road. Using Sport mode, this SUV can be fun and active while also being a bit stiff, which is what you want when driving in Sport mode.

Why is the rotary controller still present?

If there’s anything negative to say about the Mazda CX-70, it has to be the rotary infotainment controller in the console, which should have been gone from Mazda a few years ago. Instead, this new SUV continues to offer this controller, which is a bit redundant. The CX-70 has a touchscreen infotainment system, making this rotary controller an unnecessary part of the package. The space where this controller resides could be used for something else, but Mazda didn’t think to do that for some reason.

Can this SUV pull?

Like its platform sibling, the CX-70 can tow up to 5,000 pounds when powered by the non-hybrid powertrains. If you choose the PHEV model, that tow rating drops to 3,500 pounds. These are both decent figures for most towing needs.
