Inspired by Toyota’s 1960s and ’70s campers, the Toyota Tacoma Tacozilla camper is a unique creation based on the Tacoma TRD Sport. Its vintage yellow, orange, and bronze color scheme pulls up fond memories for overlanders of a specific time, and its design has fascinated a new generation of campers.

Get Off-Road With Ease in the Toyota Tacozilla
Toyota’s interesting new concept camper was based on the Tacoma TRD Sport, so it’s got everything required to get off the beaten path. A smoothed-out, narrow top and bottom lets the Tacozilla navigate off-road trails. It rides on 33-inch AT tires.
The Toyota Tacoma Tacozilla has many of the same features as the stock truck. However, Toyota lifted the Tacoma TRD Sport by two inches to provide additional clearance. There are few places you could go in a Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport that the Tacozilla can’t tackle.
The Tacoma TRD Sport features available 4WD, which the Tacozilla put to good use to allow the camper to tackle challenging terrain. Toyota also incorporated the same robust suspension system and opted for the best engine in the Tacoma TRD Sport lineup, a 278-hp 3.5L V6.
A Surprisingly Spacious Interior With the Comforts of Home
The Tacozilla camper is more than just a glorified truck-bed camper. It’s surprisingly spacious, offering enough room for even tall people to walk around comfortably. You can be six feet tall and still have some headspace in the Toyota Tacoma Tacozilla.
Toyota also managed to create enough space within the narrow walls of its Tacozilla prototype truck to include everything required to camp comfortably. You won’t have to give up the conveniences of a home with a full bathroom and kitchen.
The Tacozilla may look retro, but its creators incorporated a dual battery system to give theoretical campers access to power for modern devices. Its interior design is also thoroughly modern, with light wood paneling, natural tones, and an open atmosphere.
LED lighting throughout the camper provides nighttime visibility, and a 20-gallon water tank provides plenty of clean water for cooking and washing. The sleeping space is above the cab, and bench seats feature built-in storage.
Even in remote destinations, the Tacozilla provides all the amenities of a tiny home within its walls. However, this impressive camper can also tow up to 6,400 lbs, enough to let users tow a trailer behind for additional space or storage.
Downsides of the Toyota Tacoma Tacozilla Camper
The only real downside of the Toyota Tacoma Tacozilla camper is that the automaker only made one. The prototype at the 2021 SEMA show in Las Vegas captivated the overlanding community, but the automaker never made production models.
