The GM Apple Music integration could be nothing more than a band-aid approach to rolling back connectivity in many Cadillac and Chevrolet vehicles.
When you have something that you enjoy, and then it’s taken from you, it’s easy to get frustrated or even angry about that change. GM didn’t take connectivity out of its vehicles; they simply didn’t put Apple CarPlay and Android Auto into modern models. Instead of the traditional connectivity sources, GM transitioned away from the traditional connectivity sources to offer a GM-supplied and supported system through OnStar, which has many drivers a bit upset by the change.
Your new GM infotainment system just got better
General Motors just rolled out native Apple Music to select 2025 and newer Cadillac and Chevrolet models, and it’s their way of saying “we know you miss CarPlay, so here’s something.” The app launches today through over-the-air updates and works directly through the car’s infotainment system without needing your phone. Cadillac models get the full treatment with Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos car audio, turning your car into what GM calls a “three-dimensional sound environment.” The streaming comes free for eight years through OnStar Basics features, covering models like the Escalade IQ, CT5, Blazer EV, Equinox EV, Silverado EV, and the 2026 Corvette. GM says more brands are coming later. It’s a smart move after the backlash from ditching CarPlay, though some buyers still aren’t happy about losing the full smartphone integration they’ve grown used to.
Chevrolet native apps become the CarPlay alternative
Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are phone mirroring services that have become popular among drivers as a way to utilize phone apps for most of their connectivity needs while driving. By adding more native app experiences to some vehicles, GM can help drivers transition away from these phone mirroring services. This could easily be the next transition in infotainment systems and another step forward for autonomous driving technology. Open-ended systems are much more vulnerable to hacking than closed systems, and creating a more closed system makes for a much more secure network.
Still, removing traditional connectivity features means drivers are required to pay for services they’ve enjoyed for free in the past. That doesn’t often sit well with most drivers. Thankfully, this new GM Apple Music integration is designed to be included through OnStar Basics for eight years.
Instant streaming is a benefit of the GM Apple Music integration
The use of native apps in vehicles is beneficial for many drivers. Instead of waiting for the system, such as Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, to sync up with the vehicle, apps that are used natively through the infotainment system can be utilized immediately. This system also allows drivers to control the music selection hands-free instead of requiring the use of handheld selection on the phone or infotainment screen. This hands-free setup is offered through the vehicle’s voice assistant feature. The Dolby Atmos feature makes the sound quality incredible, especially in high-end vehicles, such as the new Cadillac Vstiq, which has a 23-speaker AKG sound system.
GM claims the infotainment experience is better through native apps
Most drivers have experienced a lack of connectivity between their phones and the infotainment system in their vehicles from time to time. Most people chalk this up to the digital world and simply restart the system or try again. Still, this annoyance can be avoided, and GM argues that it offers a better and more embedded experience through the native system than you’ll get using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Of course, this also means you don’t have the exact same apps and features on the GM infotainment system that you find on your phone, which is a huge part of why so many drivers like to use phone mirroring systems and not native infotainment systems.
GM removes phone mirroring while adding integration
The GM Apple Music integration could be just the first step in adding the right apps and features to the GM infotainment system to ensure you have the features that you want available to you on the infotainment screen. Most of the GM EVs have had phone mirroring removed, and the company is working to do the same with its internal combustion vehicles as well.
Customers complained about the changes, and GM clarified that it won’t remove the Apple CarPlay or Android Auto support from vehicles that currently have it. They are adding support for Apple Wallet and Digital Keys as well.
Is the GM Apple Music integration enough for you, or are you dismayed about the loss of phone mirroring capabilities in GM vehicles?
