It’s been too long since we’ve had the Detroit Auto Show. This show used to be held as the first car show of the calendar year, but now it’s in September.
This seasonal change and hiatus from the calendar gave automakers some time to focus on their new products and learn some ways to bring back the old to go with the new. We’ve seen incredible changes over the past couple of years when the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) was not part of the mix. Now that it’s returned, what can we expect in Detroit?
More Outdoor Events With the Seasonal Change
It seemed strange that the first car show of the calendar year was held in Detroit. While this city has a special place as the home of the American car industry, its also located in a terrible place for winter weather. Because the show used to be held in January, there wasn’t much chance of outdoor events taking place beyond a car parade. Now that the NAIAS is held in September, several outdoor functions can be scheduled and enjoyed at this event. This is good news for automakers, members of the press, and the public in attendance.
Media Preview Day Kicks Things Off
The first day of the Detroit Auto Show is September 14, and this is the media preview day. Media members get a chance to see the new models and film some of their videos without the general public in attendance. This is also a chance for members of the media to ask questions of automakers and find out more about the new models coming out. We expect to hear several reports of the new EVs and plans to transition toward more electric models from several auto brands.
The President Will Attend
President Joe Biden is a car guy, and he’s announced plans to attend the media preview day and see all of the new models being offered. This makes a lot of sense as the day that the Secret Service will have the most control and smallest crowd to deal with while protecting the President. Surely, some automakers will invite the President to sit in and take pictures with their new creations, hoping for an executive seal of approval for the new vehicles heading to the market. Because this show should be highlighted by EVs, we expect the President to spend time reviewing a few of them.
New Technologies and Auto Industry Days
The 14th and 15th of September are both dedicated to members of the automotive industry to spend time at the Detroit Auto Show and enjoy the various products and new items offered. We’ll also see Automobili-D during these two days. This is a showcase for the most advanced technologies in the market with discussion panels that can educate and inform more of these automotive workers regarding what the future of the automotive world should be. This could be an interesting display of new stuff and goals for various brands.
The Traditional Black Tie Event for Charity
The NAIAS is a time when money can be raised for various charities. September 16 is a scheduled charity preview of the vehicles for those willing to pay for the attendance, but for those enjoying this event, the dress code is black tie, and the tickets cost between $400 and $700. Those in attendance will enjoy the music of Nile Rodgers & Chic in concert. Music from Your Generation will also be enjoyed at this event, making it a fun night for all that want to support some of the charities and enjoy the new vehicles on display.
Some of the charities supported by the money raised at this event include the Boys and Girls Club of Southeast Michigan, The Children’s Center, The Children’s Foundation, and the University of Michigan Health C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital.
The Public Event Begins on the 17th
The public days of the Detroit Auto Show go from September 17-25. The show floor is open from 9 am to 9 pm, giving attendees all day to enjoy the various cars on display at Huntington Palace and Hart Plaza. Some other venues around Detroit are hosting various parts of the show, which is a huge benefit because of the warmer weather. There will be indoor and outdoor events and functions held to allow a variety of amazing experiences for everyone.
Tickets are Reasonable for this Event
Unlike some sporting events that have priced the general public out of them, the NAIAS is affordable. Tickets are $20 per adult and $50 for a family of five. Seniors will only pay $12, and kids between 3 and 12 years old cost $10 each. These prices make it reasonable and affordable for anyone to enjoy attending one of the most amazing and popular car shows in the world.
What Can You Expect to See at this Show?
Here’s where the secrets come in. It seems like this show has been the location for many surprising reveals over the years. Many times, these surprises have come from the Detroit Big Three, and as tight-lipped, as they are being right now, we’re poised to see another unexpected unveiling at this show.
We know a new 2024 Ford Mustang S650 will arrive right after the Mustang Stampede concludes on September 14. This gives us the idea we can expect some information regarding this new car.
General Motors has press conference time scheduled, but we don’t know what they are going to announce or what new vehicles will arrive.
Some news has leaked that Jeep might tell us more about the new electric SUVs that are coming to the market in 2024, but that’s not been confirmed yet.
The Detroit Auto Show is one of the most anticipated auto shows on the calendar every year. With this movement to September for this year, will this show become a much bigger event than when it was stuck in the Detroit winter?
