Great Wall Motors (GWM) brings a new utility vehicle to the market to deliver goods and products. The GWM Cannon is a new ute ready to handle the work.
The Cannon isn’t a new name for this brand, but a new CC build makes for something more useful for commercial customers. The CC model replaces the regular utility body with a flatbed aluminum tray-style bed that helps make deliveries much easier. This little ute can be perfect for delivering goods through tight and narrow streets in China and other Asian countries.
Is this new model the same as the current Cannon?
The new CC version gives many companies the capability they’ve been missing. While the height and width are the same as the traditional Cannon, this new model is longer with an aluminum tray that acts as a cargo bed to give companies the desired open-bed style and versatility that could make a huge difference in delivery efforts.
This new Cannon-CC is offered in three forms to provide added selection and versatility to the market. These three options are:
- GWM Ute Cannon-CC 4×2
- GWM Ute Cannon-CC 4×3
- GWM Ute Cannon-L CC 4×3
In addition to the three sizes, customers have three colors to choose from which are: Pearl White, Pittsburgh Silver, and Slate Gray.
What does this new GWM ute include?
Regardless of the Cannon-CC model chosen, some of the features included are:
- 18-inch alloy wheels
- Automatic LED headlights and taillights
- Side steps
- Comfort-Tek leather seats
- Air conditioning
- 9-inch color LCD touchscreen
- Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity
- Full suite of advanced safety features
For customers who choose the Cannon-L CC, a few extra items are included. Some of these are:
- Chrome accents
- Power-adjustable electric folding door mirrors with indicators
- Leather steering wheel
- Heated front seats
- Automatic climate controls
- Automatic anti-glare rearview mirror
- Front parking sensors
- 360-degree around-view camera
GWM also offers a full 7-year/unlimited mileage warranty and five years of roadside assistance, along with five years of regular service.
What if you want the regular GWM Cannon?
Great Wall Motors has experienced impressive sales success in Australia with the new Cannon. This small and active truck is an impressive off-road machine with the desired capability to take on the wilderness while navigating narrow city streets with ease. Even if you’re not a commercial customer looking for the CC body style, the traditional utility truck body could be perfect for you.
Some of the pros and cons associated with the Cannon are:
- Comfortable, well-appointed interior
- Dual transfer case and rear locking differential
- Branded transmission, transfer case, and differential locks
- Thin panels
- Complicated DPF burn process
- Incorrect power inverter outlet
Is this little truck capable in the wilderness?
Where could the best test of a small off-road truck’s capability be properly tested? A team of four took the GWM Cannon on a test through the Outback wilderness of Australia. This test would truly prove whether or not this little truck was up to the task. The goal was to make this truck work hard during a two-week journey.
Before heading out, the team chose to fit a bull bar to the truck and add a set of tires made for the rugged terrain. Otherwise, the Cannon was left alone, carrying four grown men and all the gear they would need for the journey.
The team reported this little truck handled the adventurous trek well and smoothly during most of the ride.
Eventually, the team pushed the limits by adding cameras and other equipment to the GWM Cannon to see if it was up to even tougher tasks. Whether challenged with smooth slopes where the 4H setting could be used or the tougher trails with 4L requirements, the Cannon handled the job without much of a fuss.
Is the GWM Cannon a good choice?
Although it’s not sold in the United States, the GWM Cannon could be a good vehicle to drive when you’re in a foreign country and need an off-road utility vehicle. It’s also an impressive model for commercial use with the Cannon-CC models that have a flatbed truck build. The 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine handles the power needs, and the simple but effective 4WD system is great for off-road fun.
GWM hasn’t had the best success or been the most reliable Chinese brand in the past, but they seem to have turned the corner with the Cannon. This little truck can handle some of the most treacherous terrain and will bring the passengers and cargo anywhere that other trucks can go.
